If you’ve ever dreamt of seeing the Northern Lights, standing at the edge of the world at North Cape, or simply soaking up the raw beauty of Norway’s coastline—all while travelling solo—this is the perfect way to do it.

I recently experienced the Hurtigruten Signature Voyage – North Cape Line Southbound aboard the MS Trollfjord, and it completely redefined what a solo holiday could feel like. With no need to compromise on comfort or connection, this 6-night journey from Tromsø to Bergen was immersive, invigorating, and incredibly solo-friendly.

Why Hurtigruten is a Great Choice for Solo Travellers

One of the biggest hurdles for solo travellers is the dreaded single supplement. But Hurtigruten often releases no single supplement offers on their Signature Voyages, making it far more accessible to enjoy your own space without paying double.

Onboard, I was pleasantly surprised at just how welcoming the atmosphere was for those travelling alone. Within 24 hours, staff knew my name, and I felt genuinely seen, not just as a passenger, but as a person. There were also dedicated solo traveller meetups, designed to help like-minded travellers connect in a relaxed, no-pressure way.

A Leisurely, Immersive Itinerary – Designed for Travellers, Not Tourists

Unlike Hurtigruten’s traditional working voyages, which serve as postal and cargo lifelines to Norway’s remote communities (with up to 34 brief port stops), the Signature Voyages are created for the leisure traveller.

Our southbound itinerary gave us more time in fewer, carefully selected ports—often half-day or full-day stops—allowing us to really experience each destination rather than just pass through.

Here are two of the incredible excursions I did:

ATV Adventure to the North Cape – Honningsvåg

Kitted out in thermal gear, I joined a small group for a thrilling 30km ATV ride through snow-covered terrain to reach the North Cape Plateau—Europe’s northernmost point. The ride was exhilarating, the views endless, and it was a true bucket-list moment.

The Atlantic Road – Kristiansund Region

This iconic stretch of highway connects a chain of tiny islets via eight dramatic bridges, spanning over 8km of stunning coastal scenery. Recognised as one of Norway’s official National Tourist Routes, it’s both an engineering marvel and a cultural experience, with historic fishing villages and panoramic viewpoints along the way.

Tip: Popular excursions like these do fill up, so I highly recommend pre-booking the big ones (especially North Cape, Atlantic Road, and king crab adventures). In smaller ports, you can explore independently. There were also hiking excursions offered onboard – so pack suitable gear and ask the onboard team if you’re keen on active experiences.

What’s Included: A Premium Experience from Start to Finish

Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages are all-inclusive, meaning you don’t have to worry about budgeting for meals or drinks while onboard. And trust me—the food and service were exceptional.

Dining Options on MS Trollfjord

  • Flora– Buffet-style breakfast and lunch, with a three-course set menufor dinner. You’re assigned a dinner time, and the menu changes daily with three options per course.
  • Brasserie Arran– À la carte dining from 12–9pm. Great if you want to eat outside of traditional hours or try something different. You can even pre-order king crab or a specialty steak cut for a small additional charge
  • Røst Fine Dining– Included for all meals suite guests but available to others with a modest supplement. I paid a modest supplement on the 7-course wine-paired tasting menuon the final night and it was an unforgettable experience – well worth doing at least once if you’re not a suite guest.

Drinks are included all day, not just at meals—wine, beer, cider, and select spirits are all available.

But, you always have the freedom to enjoy my time independently too.

It’s the kind of experience that gives you space to recharge while still feeling part of something special.
