Estonia’s Romantic North Coast Journey

Travel along Estonia’s northern coastline, where forest meets sea — with scenic stops, quiet landscapes, and time to experience a lesser-seen side of the country.

Begin in Cathedral Square, the historic heart of the city, before continuing past the Presidential Palace and into the courtyards of Vilnius University — one of Eastern Europe’s oldest and most atmospheric academic institutions. Climb the Bell Tower for panoramic views across the city’s red rooftops and surrounding hills.

As you wander through the Old Town’s winding streets, you’ll explore a mix of architectural styles and cultural influences that reflect centuries of change. In the artistic district of Užupis — often described as Vilnius’ bohemian quarter — cross the Vilnelė River to discover galleries, sculptures and a neighbourhood with its own independent spirit.

Along the way, a series of local tastings offer insight into Lithuanian culinary traditions — from regional produce and artisanal cheeses to rye bread, honey and a refreshing local drink. Visits to a small specialty store and the historic Halės Market provide a glimpse into everyday life, with stalls showcasing seasonal produce and traditional delicacies.

The walk concludes back in the Old Town, having experienced not only the city’s key landmarks, but also its character, flavours and local rhythm in a way that goes beyond the surface.

Optional Activity – Hot Air Ballooning

Vilnius is one of the few European capitals where hot air ballooning is still permitted, offering a unique perspective over the city’s rooftops, church spires and surrounding countryside. When conditions allow, a sunrise or early morning flight provides a memorable way to experience the landscape from above.

Flights are subject to weather conditions and air traffic control approval, with alternative routing over nearby Trakai available if required.

This experience is offered as an optional addition. Pricing for 2027 is to be confirmed, with an indicative cost of approximately AUD 550 per person.

Begin in the Old Town, where cobblestone streets lead past medieval buildings, lively squares and some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, including Dome Cathedral and St. Peter’s Church. As you walk, your guide will bring Riga’s past to life — from its Hanseatic trading roots to its more recent history.

Continue beyond the Old Town to discover Riga’s renowned Art Nouveau district, where entire streets are lined with ornate façades and intricate architectural detail. This part of the city offers a striking contrast, revealing a more elegant and creative side of Riga’s identity.

Along the way, pause for a tasting of Riga Black Balsam — a traditional herbal liqueur — and a relaxed coffee break, offering a moment to take in the atmosphere.

Later, step inside Riga Cathedral for a short organ performance, where the scale and acoustics of one of Europe’s largest historic organs create a memorable cultural moment.

In the afternoon, experience the city from a different perspective with a gentle canal and river cruise. Drifting along the City Canal and out onto the Daugava River, you’ll take in views of the Old Town skyline, bridges and surrounding districts — a calm and scenic way to round out your time in Riga.

Two full days to settle into the quiet rhythm of Saaremaa and experience life at Pilguse.

These days are intentionally open — designed for you to fully embrace the slower pace and natural surroundings.

Mornings begin gently, with fresh air, quiet views, and time to ease into the day. From here, you might explore the island’s wide, peaceful landscapes, take slow walks through surrounding nature, or simply remain at Pilguse and enjoy the stillness of the setting.

A selection of thoughtfully curated experiences is available for those who wish to explore more deeply. This may include a visit to Elda Distillery, where coastal gin is crafted using locally foraged botanicals, or the opportunity to experience a traditional Estonian smoke sauna — a deeply rooted cultural ritual.

Beyond this, your time remains your own — with the flexibility to shape each day as you choose, whether through light exploration, gentle activity, or complete rest.

You may choose to spend time wandering the Old Town’s winding laneways, where quiet courtyards, artisan stores and hidden cafés reveal themselves as you explore without an agenda. The city is compact and easily walkable, making it ideal for a slower day of discovery.

For those interested in Estonia’s more recent history, the KGB Museum offers a fascinating insight into the Soviet era, while a number of small galleries and museums throughout the city provide a deeper look at local culture and design.

Tallinn’s creative scene is also well worth exploring. The Telliskivi Creative City — a former industrial complex turned cultural hub — is home to independent boutiques, studios, restaurants and bars, offering a more contemporary contrast to the medieval Old Town.

Food and drink are very much part of the experience here. You may choose to visit the Balti Jaama Turg market, where local producers and street food vendors showcase regional flavours, or spend the afternoon exploring Tallinn’s growing craft beer scene, with a number of small breweries and relaxed bars scattered throughout the city.

Alternatively, simply take your time — revisit favourite places, enjoy a long lunch, or find a quiet spot to sit and take in the atmosphere of one of Europe’s most beautifully preserved historic centres.
